Curriculum Objectives
The curriculum is designed to engage students in reflective learning as well as to help them develop practical skills. The knowledge, skills and values taught in this subject will enable students to understand the roles of a responsible individual, family member and citizen.
To enable students to:
- develop intellectual and aesthetic attitudes towards manipulative and creative skills in relation to food, fabrics and home-making
- understand the principles underlying the choice and the safety and informed use of materials and equipment
- appreciate how rapid development of technology affects our daily lives and enhances the nurturing of quality people as well as quality homes
- develop positive attitudes towards healthy lifestyle
Curriculum Content
School-based curriculum and multiple means of assessment are designed to cater for the diverse learning needs.
The subject matter of Home Economics is divided into 3 sections.
- Food, Nutrition and Diet enables students to understand the relationship between nutrition and health and apply cooking skills in daily life.
- Home and Family deals with the skills and principles of running a home safely and wisely.
- Needlework, Dress and Design introduces the characteristics of fabrics, design principles and sewing skills.
A curriculum is incomplete without extra-curricular activities. There is a strong linkage between the curriculum and extra-curricular activities to broaden students’ horizons and arouse their awareness of science and technological development.
